SESSION 1 - Friday April 18, 19:00

Match 1:
Defending champion Jason Belmonte (Australia) (pictured, left) who famously took last year’s championship match with a dazzling 300 game followed by a 266 to defeat England’s perennial Masters runner-up Paul Moor, faces PTBC qualifier James Tidd (pictured, right) in the show-opener.

Tidd though is brimming with confidence at his first Masters opportunity: “That’s a nice first round draw! I could not ask for better really because I might as well start with the champion,” he said.

A 4-6 split in the ninth frame of the first game cost the Australian 21 pins. He hit a 6-7 in the fourth of the second game then Tidd followed with a 7-10 in his fifth frame.

The match was clinched in the ninth frame of the second game when Tidd just needed a nine-spare to close out Belmonte. He achieved that and the rest is history, David kills Goliath and the rookie reigns supreme and now awaits the outcome of the next match as he will play the winner of that round.

"My last ball was a bit dodgy," explained Tidd. I wasn't really aware that I had such a big lead and was fighting for every pin. I honestly thought that I needed that spare, so it was a big relief when I saw the final score. when you're up there you don't look at the scores so much.

"I was composed throughout the match and nowhere near as nervous as I thought I would be. To advance to the quarterfinal is a dream come true."

Match 2:
Another debutant, Holland’s Ghislaine van der Tol (pictured, left) takes on Masters veteran Guy Caminsky in the second match of the Friday evening session and the South African will be looking to improve on last year’s showing when he was bounced out in the first round by Osku Palermaa.
"Yes, I'm nervous at this chance of playing the Masters, but it is a huge privilege to be here," said Ghislaine. "I've never bowled in anything like this situation before, so I hope to do well. One of my strengths is that I can focus on my game and not worry too much about what my opponent is doing."
Well the Dutch champion from Utrecht ran into trouble right from the start as the sticky approach cost her several good deliveries. Guy Caminsky had troubles, too. "The approach was not consistent, the middle was sticky and the left and right were very slippery, so changing soles and heels on the bowling shoes was not a lot of use," he explained.
"Of course, I'm delighted to make it to the next round. The lane condition was perfect. But unless I raise my game I am not going to stand much of a chance against James Tidd."

Match 3:
If one man is due a Masters title it is England’s 'Mr Consistent' Paul Moor, a beaten finalist in ’05, ‘06 and ’07. ‘Rodge’ has a tricky opener against classy Malaysian Alex Liew (pictured, right) but home support should see him through.
"A solid game of tenpin bowling," is how talented TV commentator Simon Golding described this encounter. However, Moor's strong finish gave him more than an edge going into the second game.
Moor's ambition to beat that habit of being runner-up for three years in a row brought a better game than he has been experiencing so far this year. currently, he is not in the top eight of the European rankings after leading that prestigious group for the past three years.
"I'm really happy to beat Alex Liew as he has a really solid game. I was getting the carry with the corner pins and he wasn't, and that was the key to the game," said Moor. "I had a few wayward shots in the first game but got away with it. We were both playing the same part of the lane. I like playing against fellow left-handers as I can usually bowl inside their line with a straighter shot. Now I'm taking it one match at a time with the ambition to be in the final on Sunday."
