PENULTIMATE DAY OF QUALIFYING

Cherie Tan, a Singaporean lass of 20 tender years (pictured), shot 935 in today's 14:30 squad to lead the Local Pool of the 41st Singapore Open at the luxurious SAFRA SuperBowl, Mount Faber.

Tan's series of 242, 236, 231 and 266, her eighth 2008 entry, dislodged Jazreel Tan (no relation) from the top of the leader board. "I'm determined to do well this year," said Cherie Tan, "and I'm hoping to break the ice." She was second runner-up last year.

In the Overseas Pool, a brace of Malaysians head the standings. Zandra Aziela tops the field with 902 and is followed by 2008 runner-up Sharon Koh with 896.

The men's Local Pool features Singapore's Eugene Low in first place on 946 but 968 from Abdulla Al-Qatan from Qatar has the highest score to date in the Overseas Pool, just one pin ahead of Malaysia's Zulmazran Zulkifli in second place.

The first perfect game of the 2008 edition of this prestigious event was bowled by Qatar's Monsour Al-Awami, currently in fourth place on 954. Unfortunately, he did not qualify for the S$5,000 perfect game prize as that is only paid on randomly selected squads, usually one a day, and that was the squad following Al-Awami's.

Good coverage in Singapore's national newspaper, The Straits Times, featured the 300 as 'Perfect game not worth a cent'.

Qualifying finishes tomorrow (Thursday) and then the top 39 men, plus three from the Desperado squad, will contest the Masters. The women's field will be 30 with no Desperado qualifiers.

Each division will play 16 games with the top six going forward to the one-game stepladder final.

FINAL QUALIFYING DAY

Full squads all day today as competitors from 14 nations vie for a place in one of the three pools and therefore advance to the Masters tomorrow morning.

Hanging in there is Asian star Shaker Al-Hassan from the United Arab Emirates, just off the lanes from the 14:30 squad and lying in 12th place in the Mixed Pool with 863 over the four games. It's safe to predict that he will be back on the lanes to try to improve on that score.

Defending champion Mika Koivuniemi was loosening up on this squad. He has a bye into tomorrow's Masters.

Not many changes in the 16:00 squad (running an hour late) but good news for Shaker Al-Hassan as he climbs to sixth in the men's mixed pool and looks good for the Masters.

There's a new leader in the women's overseas pool as Chinese Taipei's Hsieh Chia-Li (pictured)rallied for a 932 to head that division with her 'helicopter' style

Just 16 bowlers took advantage of the Desperado squad, the final chance to win a place in the Masters' division and on to 16 more games in search of glory. The three to win those coveted places were Wang Tien-Fu of Chinese Taipei, Phoenphun Yakesem from Thailand and Malaysia's Aaron Kong.

Defending champions Mika Koivuniemi and Zatil Iman now join the fray for some serious bowling, each determined to make it a double victory. The top six in each division will progress to the stepladder final on Saturday evening.
