BRUNSWICK AALBORG INTERNATIONAL

Friday features three full squads, each with a waiting list long enough to fill yet another dozen lanes added to the 30 of the friendly Lovvang Bowl.

Many players are making their 2008 debut on the opening squad at noon, among them two PBA stars from the United States, Bill O'Neill and Michael Fagan. The there are the national ladies' teams from the Netherlands, Sweden and Finland, all promising a dazzling display of tenpin talent.

SQUAD 7 - Friday 12 Noon:

Well, Rene Sejling's leading score of 1418 has at last tumbled into second place and the glory of having a Danish player at the top of the leader board has passed. Now the honors have passed to the slim shoulders of American PBA bowler Michael Fagan who has upped the ante to 1429 with an impressive six-game series this morning that included a 270 and a finishing 289, robbed of a perfect game by a stubborn 9-pin in the final frame of the sixth game.

One great highlight of this squad was the event's third perfect game, this time from the gentle hands of Sweden's slim blond Helen Johnsson, her fifth career perfect game. "I've played this dual condition before in the World Ranking Masters," she explained, "but I personally prefer to havfe blocks either on the long pattern or the short pattern, not mixed on the pair of lanes. I find it so difficult to keep my concentration on which lane is which and what equipment to use."

Fagan, from Long Island, New York (pictured) has found a happy hunting ground in Europe. He has played and enjoyed a few of the European Bowling Tour stops already and plans to hit quite a few more before returning to the States for the PBA Tour.
Likeable lad Fagan has bowled several European tournaments and very much appreciates the talents of the players over here. "I've played in Germany, France and other countries and had a lot of fun," the slim American told me. "The education and conditions that Kegel has provided on the tour has made the competition very fierce. This is the first time I have bowled on the dual lane condition. The first game was a little tricky and it took me a little while to get used to it. You need to have two balls that work as if you can't strike on one pattern you can't throw a double. It's challenging to find two balls that work at the same time. I decided to go with a weaker ball on the short so that I could throw it a little bit harder and a stronger ball, playing a lot deeper on the long pattern. I had to slow down my ball speed and it worked out."

SQUAD 8 - Friday 16:00:

Squad 8 now complete and we're past the half way mark in this brilliant new format for the Brunswick Aalborg International. Players from all 13 nations entered have now participated and the consensus of opinion is that the dual lane condition is the way to go.

We have a new name as leader of Squad 8, although his 1,370 did not reach the lofty heights of Michael Fagan with 1429 set in the opening squad of the day. Magnus Andersson, a 33-year-old truck driver from Norrkoping in Sweden was still pretty pleased at his efforts, competing in his third BAI. "I did reach the top eight a couple of years ago, so I want to do that again," he commented. "Conditions here were really good today for my first entry and I found the short oil pattern the easier one, so that was my favourite. I will be bowling again on Saturday afternoon as we have an entry for all Swedish national team members.
"We haven't as yet made the selection for the team to travel to Thailand for the men's world championships so I am hoping to get a place to go there."

Leading by example was Swedish national team coach Tomas Leandersson, known to many for his captaincy of the European team in the annual Weber Cup. He was well on track for a 300 in his final game of the evening but a stubborn 9-pin on the final ball brought him a 299.
Defending champion Sami Konsteri of Finland was second to Andersson on this squad, just 14 pins back on 1356. A 189 sandwiched between 258 and 266 cost him a chance of challenging Fagan.

SQUAD 9 - Friday 20:00:
Local bowler Mikael Brandeskov, 25, a bowling center employee in Harbro (pictured), not far from Aalborg, topped the final squad of the day with a neat 1419, which slots nicely into second place in the overall standings, just behind American pro bowler Michael Fagan.

Brandeskov, a regular competitor in this Brunswick Aalborg International, needed a good final game of the six-game set to hold off a strong challenge from Swedish national team player and recent Brunswick Euro Challenge champion Peter Ljung. The Dane found the 'pocket' each frame for a 253 total to settle the issue and beat Ljung by 29 pins.

Once again the squad was full to overflow and all but the 08:00 squad on Saturday morning are full. Everybody seems to like the dual lane condition format.
